Wayang Kulit

Two puppets,
one in each hand

Play two leather shadow puppets on the lamp-lit kelir. Your webcam tracks both hands, just as a dalang holds the sticks.

• Left & right handEach hand holds one character: the left hand plays the left puppet, the right hand the right one.
• PalmThe body stick (gapit). The puppet follows it.
• Thumb & indexThat puppet's two arm rods (tuding). Spread, raise or pinch them.
• Tilt handThe puppet leans with you.
• Closer to cameraLifts that puppet off the screen, so its shadow grows and softens.
• Little fingerShow only your pinky: that puppet performs its kiprahan, a signature dance on the gamelan beat.
